The Bengal Tiger

Panthera tigris tigris
also known as: the royal bengal tiger, the indian tiger

Bengal tigers are second in size to their Siberian relative. Males can grow approximately 10 feet and weigh up to 500 pounds, while females are a bit smaller growing to about 8 feet in length and weighing up to 300 pounds.
Bengal Tigers range primarily throughout India, as well as Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh. They are highly adaptable to many habitats from tropical rainforests to snow-covered coniferous and deciduous forests and from mangrove swamps to drier forests. Their territorial range is estimated for males at 10 to 45 miles squared and females 5 to 15 miles squared. A map is posted below.
They prefer prey such as Samber deer and wild cattle. However, when a Bengal is hungry it has been known to eat pigs, monkeys, birds and snakes.
Bengal tigers have been labeled as "man-eaters". After studies have proved otherwise, it is known that cases that Bengals attacked humans were old or injured adult cats that lived in areas that had diminishing prey. Tribes travel in lines and it was the last man in line that had his back turned who was attacked in most cases. It is now standard for that last person to wear a mask with large eyes staring backwards to confuse the tiger into thinking the person is looking in both directions. As silly as this seems, it has helped to reduce the attacks to 0 when used.
The truth be told by Jim Corbett, author of "Maneaters of Kumaon", states that no more than 3 out of 1,000 tigers were guilty of attaking humans.
Today, only 3000 to 4800 Bengals exist. That is more than all the other 4 sub-species put together. Approximately 350 live in zoos, mainly in India.
The zoos in India have bred tigers since 1880. In 1997 the International Tiger Stud Book was produced. It contains all of the studbook-registered captive population is maintained in Indian zoos, except for one female Bengal tiger in North America. You can view the book here: http://www.5tigers.org/Research/zooManagin...ks/studbook.htm

How in the world did I miss this the first time around? blink.gif My favorite animal! (Thanks for bumping it, stripie. smile.gif) What magnificent creatures!! The beauty, grace, and power of these animals is awesome. :notworthy: How can anyone look at one of these beauties and not fall in love? wub.gif

BTW (I've posted this before) I got to hold a baby Bengal, in January '05. :colorful bounce: I have a polaroid photo that's not of very good quality, but someday I may try scanning it so my friends here can see it. His name was Caesar and his fur was so soft. wub.gif Too bad I only got to hold him in my lap for a couple of minutes, just long enough for the photo to be snapped, but it's an experience I'll never forget. biggrin.gif

Thank you for a great article, AQ! clap.gif

Anya...the reason you missed this article the first time around is because niether of us were even here in 2004. HAHAHA I think AQ will forgive us. laugh.gif

But you do have to scan that picture. I know it would have to be wonderful to hold a cute tiger cub.

AQ....girl...we were all dorky at 13!!!!!
